Port City Colombo marks World Environment Day 2024 and highlights commitment to sustainable development – Adaderana Biz English

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2024, Port City Colombo reaffirms its continued commitment to sustainable development and environmental management, as part of #GenerationRestoration. Embracing the 2024 theme: ‘Our country. Our Future’, Port City Colombo continues to lead by example and integrate the latest sustainability principles into every aspect of its development.

Port City of Colombo is Sri Lanka’s first “Green and Blue Special Economic Zone (SEZ)”, dedicated to harmonizing urban life with the natural environment. From meticulous planning and innovative design to responsible construction practices, sustainability is embedded in the underlying DNA of Port City Colombo. The comprehensive Development Control Regulations (DCR), which govern all developments within this Special Economic Zone, exemplify this ethos while prioritizing environmentally friendly infrastructure, renewable energy and green building standards.

“Port City Colombo is the embodiment of the South Asian vision of a sustainable urban future. Our commitment to promoting a positive culture of wellbeing and environmental stewardship in Sri Lanka is reflected in every facet of the project’s mixed-use, energy-efficient masterplan, which includes the Central Waterway, a beach area open to the general public and managed green spaces,” said Xiong Hongfeng, Managing Director of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. “With approximately 40 hectares of the Port City Colombo project dedicated to eco-friendly public spaces, we aim to create a blue and green livable master-planned city that will strengthen the underlying principles of sustainability.”

The Port City Colombo masterplan will promote a balanced urban lifestyle by creating expansive green and blue spaces. More than 40 hectares of the 269 hectare project will be dedicated to parks, gardens, waterfront promenades and beaches. These areas will enable a more sustainable life and offer residents and visitors a refreshing connection with nature.

For maximum energy efficiency, Port City Colombo will adhere to strict energy standards and emphasize renewable energy, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and optimizing energy consumption. For this purpose, advanced technologies and sustainable design practices will be seamlessly integrated into the project’s urban design master plan.

To conserve water, Port City Colombo will have state-of-the-art rainwater harvesting and water recycling systems, ensuring efficient water use. Meanwhile, waste management strategies will focus on minimizing waste generation, maximizing recycling rates and reducing the overall carbon footprint.

A pedestrian-optimized transportation network will further ensure efficient and environmentally friendly mobility within Port City Colombo, while supporting non-motorized transportation such as cycling and walking. As part of its sustainability strategy, Port City Colombo will also offer developers, residents and other operators various incentives to adhere to sustainable principles.

As Port City Colombo celebrates World Environment Day 2024, the project welcomes investors and the global community to join hands in building a greener future and setting the benchmark for sustainable urban development in South Asia.
