Questions and answers about local elections in Laois: ‘Housing appears to be the biggest problem’

What are your priorities?

My priorities are the revitalization of the village of Rosenallis, the promotion of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, an Inner Relief Road for Mountmellick and securing housing schemes for every town and village in the Mountmellick/Borris in Ossory Area.

What is the biggest problem facing your region?

Housing appears to be the biggest problem, with young people struggling to afford housing, having limited rental options and in need of affordable housing. Health issues also resonate strongly, with many not eligible for medical cards due to outdated income thresholds. Long waiting lists in hospitals are a major problem among voters in my area. There are also problems with road repair and maintenance, highlighting the need for infrastructure investment.
There is an urgent need for the Mountmellick flood relief program to enable the development of the town, help the town commercially and promote people’s safety by removing heavy traffic from the town.

Why do you think you would be a good councilor?

I am a full-time representative. I bring almost forty years of experience at local government level. I am fully committed to the development of The Mountmellick/Borris in the Ossory area. I have always been committed to helping everyone and representing all groups in the Mountmellick/Borris area of Ossory, regardless of my political beliefs, and I will continue to do so if re-elected.

Seamus McDonald is a candidate in the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick municipal district. In the run-up to election day on June 7, we will be featuring profiles of all 47 candidates vying for a seat on Laois County Council.
