‘There’s something about their beauty:’ Melissa Maxwell creates photorealistic flowers

COSHOCTON − Melissa Maxwell of Warsaw is the Artist of the Month for June for the Coshocton Art Guild.

Maxwell creates photorealistic flowers, with each petal carefully painted in transparent watercolor and oil, building layer upon layer to build brightness.

“There’s something about their beauty that draws me in and makes me want to stick around. I like to capture the moment when the sunlight penetrates the petals. I hope to inspire others to see the subtle beauty in nature that often goes unnoticed,” she said.

Through the guild, Maxwell has participated in art shows and competitions and volunteered her time and talents for everything from face painting for children at Clary Gardens to serving meals at the guild’s open mic nights.

Maxwell’s talent for design can be seen as you stroll through the Tollhouse Art and Gifts store in Roscoe Village. The unique gallery showcases local artists and offers guild members the opportunity to display and sell pieces to tourists from all over the world. The Tollhouse is a volunteer run shop, each artist must work one day a month. Not only does Maxwell create pieces for the store, she also serves as a curator for the gallery.

“It is very special and important to have a place where artists in our community can display and sell their artwork in a place like the Toll House,” she said.

If you’re lucky, you’ll see Maxwell using her easel to capture the local beauty of the area.

“This summer I hope to do a lot of plein air painting, meaning outdoor painting. You learn more about what you’re painting when you observe it firsthand,” she said.
