Rochdale AFC have signed winger Connor McBride on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Gateshead.

McBride is a former Celtic youngster who joined Gateshead last summer and made more than 30 appearances last season as the club finished sixth in the National League and won the FA Trophy.

The 23-year-old said: “First and foremost Rochdale is a massive club. They only played in the league a few years ago and have a good fan base. Most importantly, the manager is the reason I came here.

“The way he sees the game is similar to how I see it. The playing style suits me and I can’t wait to work for him. It made it an easy decision for me to come. He wants to get the ball down and make plays, which suits me, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Born in Falkirk, Scotland, McBride spent a spell with his hometown club before joining Celtic, where he spent time as part of their Under-20 team.

After a loan spell at Stenhousemuir, he joined Blackburn Rovers on a permanent deal in the summer of 2020, making regular appearances for their Under-21 side.

He was part of the Queens Park team that won promotion to the Scottish Championship while on loan in 21/22, before signing for Raith Rovers in the same division.

After 24 appearances for Rovers, he signed for Gateshead last summer, making 31 appearances in all competitions as they achieved a top six finish and won the FA Trophy.
