APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The city of Appleton is looking for its first Poet Laureate.

The city and the Appleton Public Library are leading the initiative as a way to promote poetry in the community.

The Poet Laureate will create at least two original poems annually for city events, festivals, and ceremonies and present a minimum of three programs or projects each year to connect community members with poetry, such as workshops, open mic events, and outreach initiatives.

The candidate will serve a two-year term, from September 2024 to September 2026, following an orientation in late August 2024. This honorary position includes an annual honorarium of $2,000 and up to $1,000 for program expenses, provided by Appleton.

Applications are now open. Applications must be received by 11:59 pm on Sunday, June 30, 2024. Selection will be based on a poet’s literary excellence, vision, and potential to enhance the city’s cultural landscape. A committee of Appleton staff and community members will review applications and recommend candidates to the mayor, who will make the final decision.
