Rotary awards two prizes after board change –

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie presented two awards, one for the first time ever.

Each year at the club’s board changeover meeting, the Rotarian of the Year award is presented to someone who embodies the club’s values. This year’s winner was Frank Perrin.

Perrin, a Rotarian for 10 years, said he feels honored to have been chosen by his peers to receive the award, among a group of members dedicated to improving Portage. He hopes to bring more members into the club next year.

“We do a lot of good things. Drive around the community, check out everything that has the Rotary name on it,” Perrin notes. “The events are fun. We do fundraise, but it’s not that challenging. When we do things like this, we have a good time together. It’s a good group of people and it’s fun.”

After Perrin received his award, the club announced a new award, called the Friend of Rotary Award. Brenda Miller-Adams received this award after coming up with the idea to have the Sister of the Holy Rock perform in Portage, with the proceeds going to the Rotary Club. The concert raised approximately $5,000 for the club.

“It was an absolute surprise and pleasure to accept the award on behalf of my work with Rotary,” Miller-Adams said. “They are very organized and offer a lot of different things to our community.”

She said this award shows that even people who don’t want to officially join the club can choose when they want to volunteer and still make a positive contribution to the community.
