High-tech check cloning fraud exposed

In a major raid, Bulandshahr district police have arrested a 10-member gang in Uttar Pradesh for duping people of crores of rupees using a sophisticated cheque-cloning scam. The gang’s methods were more sophisticated than those used in the 2002 film ‘Catch Me If You Can’, in which Leonardo DiCaprio played conman Frank Abagnale Jr.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar, the gang’s operation was highly organised, with each member having specific roles similar to a business setup. The sophisticated scam involved stealing cheque books from customers, removing details from cancelled cheques using chemicals and printing details from new cheque books before reaching the customers. They posed as account holders to withdraw money using forged signatures.

Police have seized 42 mobile phones, 33 SIM cards, 12 cheque books and other related materials. The gang was active in various states including Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh. The accused have been remanded in police custody after their arrest.
