Harris County Offers Free Personal Safety Course for College-Going Women

Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is hosting a free Personal Safety Class for college-going women. This is the third summer this class has been offered to help Katy area women prepare for college.

Free class this week

This Wednesday, July 10, 2024, the Harris County Constable’s Office will host a free personal safety course for college-going women. The course is free and will be held on CrossRoad Church (700 Westgreen Blvd.) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

The course grew out of the popular Women’s Self Defense Course that Precinct 5 offers several times a year. This course is specifically designed to help young women prepare for college.

“I can’t teach self-defense in three hours,” says instructor Lt. Roy Guinn. “I focus primarily on education and teaching participants how to recognize danger at a distance.”

Not being aware is dangerous

When Lt. Guinn was teaching this course at the University of Houston last year, he noticed that everyone in the hallway was on their phones or had earbuds in.

“When you’re out in public, it’s very dangerous to be unaware,” said Lt. Guinn, recalling a horrific attack on a Houston woman. During the investigation, it was discovered that her attacker had been following her for a long time. The victim was unaware of the danger until it was too late.

“Most suspects are known to follow their victims,” Lt. Guinn said. “We want everyone to be aware because when you are aware, you have more options to keep yourself safe.”

This level of awareness is a key point in the educational portion of the course. Lt. Guinn says they teach women how to respond to long-range, medium-range, and short-range hazards. The further away the hazard, the greater the chance of a victim escaping.

The course concludes with basic hitting techniques, with an emphasis on where and how to hit.

“The goal, though, is not to fight,” Lt. Guinn said. “Most people don’t want to fight. And the mission is to avoid that scenario.”

The course is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
