Peter Obi donates 10 million naira to Kogi nursing school, calls for more investment in healthcare

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has donated N10 million to the Grimard College of Nursing Sciences in Anyigba, Kogi State.

The former Anambra State governor made the donation during a visit to the institution on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday via X, Obi stressed the college’s critical role in Nigeria’s primary health care sector. He said: “Grimard College of Nursing Sciences noted that “the state continues to play a very critical role in the country’s primary health care sector through the training and mentoring of healthcare professionals who make a difference in the society.

“I have not only been consistent in urging governments at all levels to invest more in health and education, but I have also called on donor agencies to do the same.”

Obi stressed the importance of nursing education, writing: “I am particularly concerned about the training of nurses as they are central to our primary health care.”

He warned of a possible shortage of nurses and stressed the need for proactive measures.

“As experts continue to warn of a looming serious shortage of nurses, we must remain proactive by investing in their training. That way, we can have enough for our domestic health sector and export more to the global community,” he said.

Obi expressed his gratitude to the management and staff of the college for their dedication to training healthcare professionals. He also encouraged the nursing students to remain focused on their studies.

“We remain committed to building a new Nigeria that provides Nigerians with access to quality healthcare and educational opportunities,” Obi added.
